MILENGE District Commissioner Mwenya Bupe has called for intensified sensitisation on  behavioural change among adolescents in the area.

Mr. Bupe observed that there was a high number of adolescents who are engaging in illicit activities such as alcohol consumption.

ZANIS reports that The District Commissioner said this during the District Adolescent Health Technical Working Group meeting which was held in the Council Chamber yesterday.

Mr. Bupe said illicit activities such as alcohol consumption lead to risky behaviours hence there is need to curb the vices which are rampant in the district.

And Milenge District AIDS Coordination Advisor (DACA) Fanny Gondwe noted that there was need to step up the dissemination of information on Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights.

Ms. Gondwe said the high number of teenage pregnancies in the area is evidence that adolescents are engaging in unprotected sex.

A report presented in the same meeting by the District Health Office focusing on the second quarter of 2020 indicated that 92 adolescents were on Antiretroviral therapy while 17 were treated for Sexually Transimitted Infections (STIs).

Ms. Gondwe called on adolescents to seek  sexual and reproductive health services being offered in health facilities across the district.

She said seeking such services will enable them protect themselves from having unplanned pregnancies and contracting STIs.

Earlier, Milenge District Agricultural Coordinator (DACO)Tom Mwansabamba raised concern over the lack of youth participation in agricultural activities.

Mr. Mwansabamba noted that there was a low number of youths taking part in  programmes such as the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP).

He said agricultural activities are one way youths can be productive other than indulging in illicit activities which are detrimental to their health and the development of the district.

The DACO has since urged youths to take interest in agricultural activities especially those funded by government.
