MILENGE District Hospital Medical Officer In Charge Nicholas Sakala has raised concern over the poor health seeking behaviour of some members of the community.

Dr. Sakala observed that some clients only go to health facilities when their conditions become critical and it is usually too late for health practitioners to intervene.

ZANIS reports that Dr. Sakala said this during the District Adolescent Health Technical Working Group meeting which was held in the Council Chamber yesterday.

He added that most people in the area are fond of visiting traditional healers and pastors and only seek medical intervention when their situation deteriorates.

Dr. Sakala noted that there was rampant consumption of herbal medicine especially among pregnant women.

"There is a high rate of intake of herbal medication in pregnant women which in turn leads to increased contractions and tears in the birth canal. There is urgent need for people to discard traditional beliefs that make them disregard medical advice," he stated.

Meanwhile, Acting Milenge District Administrative Officer Godfrey Chikonde said the district administration will engage the church and the traditional leadership to see how best the situation can be sorted out.

Mr. Chikonde noted that the clergy and traditional leaders need to be sensitised on the importance of prioritising the health of residents.

He said all the stakeholders should encourage members of the community to adopt good health practices.

Mr. Chikonde said the district administration won't take kindly to the clergy and traditional healers who are putting the lives of residents at risk.

However, due to a combination of factors, many girls in rural communities are forced to leave school while others never have the opportunity to go to school.   Schools are spaces in which girls exercise their agency, make their voices heard and access their first leadership opportunities.   It is a known fact that as a result of gender inequality in education, girls are denied the chance to develop skills that can help them take charge in their homes, careers, communities and the country as a whole.   The introduction of the Re-entry policy by the Patriotic Front (PF) Government under the able Leadership of President Edgar Lungu, must be commended by all well-meaning Zambia...
