Milenge District AIDS Coordination Advisor (DACA) Fanny Gondwe has called on the church to double up its efforts in instilling Christian principles in adolescents in the district.

Ms. Gondwe noted that there is moral decay among adolescents in the area which has led to most of them engaging in illicit activities such as premarital sex.

ZANIS reports that Ms. Gondwe said this during a District Adolescent Health data review meeting for the first quarter of 2021 which was held at Milenge Resource Centre yesterday.

“I try as much as possible to encourage school going children to abstain from premarital sex. From my interactions with them during outreach programmes in some schools, I observed that some of them are sexually active as they did not wholly receive the abstinence message," she said.

Ms. Gondwe added that the pupils defended themselves by saying they use protection.

She said the church needs to do more to inculcate spiritual values in adolescents to deter immoral behaviour.

Meanwhile, Milenge Catholic Parish Brother Charles Chilambe reaffirmed the role of the church in teaching about the sinful nature of sex before marriage.

Br. Chilambe said the church will not relent in imparting spiritual knowledge in adolescents which will also help them live healthy lives.

"As Milenge parish, we are strengthening bible sharing groups among adolescents to enhance their spiritual lives," he said.

Earlier, Milenge District Nursing Officer Francis Chungu reported to the committee that 206 adolescent pregnancies were recorded in the first quarter of 2021 in 15 health facilities across the district.

Mr. Chungu added that 127 adolescents between the ages of 15 and 19 accessed family planning services during the same period and 15 abortions were conducted among adolescents.

However, due to a combination of factors, many girls in rural communities are forced to leave school while others never have the opportunity to go to school.   Schools are spaces in which girls exercise their agency, make their voices heard and access their first leadership opportunities.   It is a known fact that as a result of gender inequality in education, girls are denied the chance to develop skills that can help them take charge in their homes, careers, communities and the country as a whole.   The introduction of the Re-entry policy by the Patriotic Front (PF) Government under the able Leadership of President Edgar Lungu, must be commended by all well-meaning Zambia...
